What else can I use without plastic straws?
Dec 13, 2021
Many people panicked because McDonald's and other catering companies no longer provide disposable plastic straws. If the most common plastic straw can no longer be used, what else can we use to replace it? McDonald’s does not actively provide straws. At present, the most common straws are mainly plastic straws, paper straws, metal straws, glass straws and PLA straws. PLA is also a plastic. The difference from ordinary plastics is that it is mainly composed of plant starches such as corn and is a biodegradable plastic. The straws of different materials are different in terms of performance and price. Glass and metal straws are relatively inconvenient to use. They are often used in households, but are rarely used in catering, tea and other businesses. Among the other three straws, the price of paper straws and biodegradable PLA straws are about three times that of ordinary disposable plastic straws. According to national regulations, from January 1, 2021, the catering industry across the country will no longer be able to use disposable non-degradable plastic straws. From the actual situation, most catering companies choose paper straws as an alternative. How big is the impact on the catering industry and consumers? Nayuki's tea-related person in charge said that for them, the biggest cost is the raw materials for tea, and the cost of straws is negligible. Therefore, the inability to use disposable straws will not have an impact on their operating costs. Compared with the cost, they are more worried about the different experience brought by different straws. For example, the degradable paper straws are easier to dissolve when drinking hot drinks, which will affect the taste. This is a common problem faced by tea brands when replacing paper straws. It is worth noting that the current ban on non-degradable disposable plastic straws is concentrated in the catering industry. The straws that come with beverages such as milk and beverages, as well as the purchase of disposable plastic straws by consumers themselves, are not within the ban.
