It's easy to believe that paper cups are made of 100% paper, but that's not entirely true. To prevent the paper from absorbing moisture, appearing soft and leaking, the inside of the cup needs to be coated with a thin layer.

Paper makes up about 90 percent of the cup. The paper is made of food-grade raw materials to ensure hygiene and food safety.

Nowadays, more and more paper cups are made from forest-certified paper, thus keeping businesses responsible and keeping forests safe.

The inside of the cup is coated to prevent water seepage. Often the coating can be made from PE, a fossil-based raw material. Of course, it can also be made from fossil-free plant-based materials, such as PLA, or water based lining.
